Clementine's (Closed Permanently)

(33 Ratings)
The oldest gay bar west of the Mississippi
Beer, beef, and jockey underwear. What more could one want? Well, it's also a historical bar in a historical neighborhood, offering a full steak and rib menu.

It's a Shame

What used to be one of St. Louis' best bars is fast becoming one of the worst. The owners sit at the bar around the clock looking like zombies, and the rudeness of the bartenders is pathetic. Why someone who obviously has no clue about customer service runs a place like this is amazing. You'll never hear the bartenders say hello or the words "thank you." Food is pretty good but has gone up in price and just not a fun place like it was years ago. I'm sure the owners and bartenders have noticed the drop off in business. Sadly, they just don't get it as to why that is. Personally, me and many of my frineds are tired of being treated so disrespectfully there and have taken our hard earned money to bars that at least say hello and recognize repeated customers.

Older crowd hangout

This is not a twink bar. Not a make out bar. This gets a good after work crowd and is quite popular on the weekends early evenings. This is a place to start it off. You get the average Joe in his 20's - 70's. Conversation is abundant. Wear a smile on your face and be engaging and you'll meet a lot of people as people come and go frequently. Older crowd, friendly hustlers, and in January will be smoke free. Monday & Tuesday early evenings $1 draft bud light. Saturday & Sunday free food from 3 pm - 4 pm. The diner is fair, but pass if you are a foodie. There are better places nearby to eat. If you are looking for easy conversation and a cheap drink then come here. You can play pool or darts. Free popcorn. They play 80's pop. Not many lookers here.

Pollyanna

So after reading all the "glass half empty" reviews - I figure I'll put in my two cents. I love the place. When you order a drink, you get a DRINK. (psst...the way to turn a surly bartender into your friend and even sometimes get your cocktail when you're three back in the line: tip big your first round - especially if you order a Womantini) ! If you're not familiar with the cuisine that Clem's restaurant is known for (it's not a grilled cheese, that's for sure), ask your server. The chicken pot pie is outta this world, and I don't think you'll find a better deal on a filet mignon dinner in the city. If you're coming in for the first time, you might think it's clique-ish - but throw out some indicators that your new and lookin' for friends - you'll have them. Yeah, it's an older crowd, but you won't stay young forever, and it's sure nice to know you'll have a place to go to fit in when your time comes ! Sure, Clems has it's flaws, as does every other bar in the city. But for my money's worth, I'm going to Clementines.
